Dubai: In an effort to promote sustainability during Ramadan 2025, Dubai Municipality has called on residents to avoid using single-use plastic containers and tableware during iftar. The civic body encourages small but impactful changes in daily routines to support environmental consciousness and reduce plastic waste.
In a recent social media post, Dubai Municipality reminded residents that Ramadan is a time to reflect on their choices and adopt more sustainable practices. One of the key recommendations is to choose reusable tableware instead of disposable plastic containers, which are often used during large iftar gatherings. By opting for reusable alternatives, residents can help minimize plastic waste and contribute to the city’s ongoing efforts to phase out single-use plastics.
Dubai is making significant strides in reducing plastic consumption. The city has already implemented a ban on single-use plastic bags, which came into effect on January 1, 2024, and will expand to include additional single-use plastic items in the coming years. From January 1, 2025, plastic stirrers, Styrofoam cups, and plastic food containers will be banned, with further restrictions on plastic cutlery, plates, and cups starting in 2026.
Alongside these initiatives, Dubai Municipality also emphasized the importance of reducing food waste during Ramadan, a time when large gatherings for iftar and suhoor are common. The civic body encouraged residents to plan their meals wisely, buy only what they need, and store food properly to avoid wastage. Leftovers should be repurposed to ensure no food goes to waste.
In partnership with the UAE Food Bank, Dubai Municipality is also working to redirect surplus food to those in need, especially during Ramadan. The municipality urged residents to support this initiative by donating any excess food to registered charity organizations.
In addition to food and plastic waste reduction, the municipality stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and sustainability throughout the city. Residents are encouraged to practice good hygiene, recycle materials, and use eco-friendly products to help preserve the environment during the holy month.
