Dubai Unveils RailBus: A Futuristic First- and Last-Mile Solution for Underserved Communities

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled the RailBus, a new first- and last-mile transportation solution. It aims to connect communities not currently served by the Dubai Metro or Tram. The announcement was made at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2025. Details were provided by Malek Ramadan Mishmish, the Director of Rail Planning and Projects Development at RTA.

The RailBus will operate in densely populated areas of Dubai. This includes neighbourhoods such as Karama, Al Barsha, and Deira, which are not directly linked to the city’s existing rail network. The vehicles are designed to pick up passengers from these local communities. They will transport them to the nearest Metro station. Mishmish explained that the RailBus will feature a separate rail network within specific areas. It combines the flexibility of a bus with the efficiency of a rail system.

One of the key features of RailBus is its quiet operation. This makes it particularly suitable for residential areas where noise pollution is a concern. Mishmish highlighted that the vehicle’s design prioritizes minimal noise. This will offer an enhanced commuting experience.

The RTA plans to complete the technical and feasibility studies for the project within the next two to three years. The aim is to implement the RailBus as a cost-effective alternative. This will extend the Metro or Tram network into these densely populated areas. The RailBus will be powered by solar energy and will be fully driverless. This is much like the Dubai Metro and Tram.

In line with Dubai’s focus on sustainability, the RailBus vehicles will be 3D printed using recycled materials. This will ensure an environmentally friendly production process. The sleek, futuristic design of the RailBus has been optimized for urban landscapes. It reduces energy consumption while prioritizing passenger comfort.

Each RailBus capsule will be 11.5 meters long, 2.65 meters wide, and 2.9 meters tall. They are designed to run on elevated tracks that meet international rail standards. The vehicles will have a capacity to carry up to 40 passengers — with 24 seats and 16 standing spaces — and can travel at speeds of up to 100 km/h. Despite its spacious capacity, the RailBus is lightweight. It weighs only 8 tonnes when empty.

This innovative transportation solution is expected to improve connectivity across Dubai’s urban areas. It will provide a sustainable alternative to traditional public transport methods.
