Delayed Budget Tables Stir Parliament

In Iraq, delayed budget tables have sparked a heated debate in parliament. Lawmakers submitted a request for a public session. They want the government to explain why it failed to deliver the 2025 budget tables on time.

Lawmakers submitted this request directly to the Speaker of Parliament. Lawmakers expressed concern over the absence of the 2025 financial tables. As a result, parliament summoned the Finance Minister to explain the situation in an open session.

Previously, on July 20, 2025, the Finance Minister attended a meeting with the Finance Committee. That session focused on three main areas: government program implementation, the status of the 2023–2025 federal budget, and preparation of the 2025 budget breakdown.

During the meeting, the Minister shared some key details. A special government committee was formed to draft the new budget tables. This committee is operating under a direct order from the Prime Minister. However, their work has taken longer than expected.

The committee encountered serious obstacles. Fluctuating oil prices disrupted their planning. Meanwhile, unresolved disputes with the Kurdistan Region further delayed the process. These challenges directly impacted budget funding and halted some financial commitments.

But the issue of delayed budget tables goes far beyond technical delays. Many government employees now face postponed promotions and unpaid allowances. Additionally, essential services and development projects are on hold. Local governments are struggling to move forward.

It’s important to note that the 2025 budget is part of a three-year fiscal plan passed in 2023. That law requires the government to submit detailed financial tables for each year. These must include projected revenues, expenses, and funding strategies.

The government failed to meet this requirement on time. As a result, delayed budget tables have become a growing political issue. Lawmakers are demanding immediate answers and a clear timeline.

In conclusion, parliament is preparing to take further steps. The public and officials alike now await concrete action and a path forward.
