China Supports Iraq’s Efforts to Clear Explosive Hazards and Boost Safety

China is helping Iraq strengthen its mine action programs, improving safety and supporting long-term development. This support highlights growing international cooperation to address Iraq’s explosive ordnance challenges.

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Iraq welcomed China’s assistance. The support focuses on training Iraqi personnel, improving survey and clearance work, and building local capacity. These programs aim to protect civilians from unexploded ordnance and help communities recover.

Iraq still faces one of the world’s highest levels of land contaminated with explosive hazards. The Directorate for Mine Action (DMA) and the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) estimate about 2,723 square kilometers remain affected. These areas contain leftover ordnance from more than forty years of conflict.

Explosive ordnance continues to threaten daily life. Women, men, and children face risks while communities struggle to access healthcare, schools, and other vital services. Clearing these areas remains a top priority for the government and international partners.

China’s support will also assist Iraq in restoring damaged infrastructure and opening land for safe use. The programs will help communities rebuild, encourage investment, and support economic recovery. In addition, local authorities will gain skills to manage mine action more effectively in the future.

The partnership shows the importance of combining international expertise with local knowledge. Moreover, UNMAS noted that coordination between Iraq and China will speed land clearance, protect civilians, and restore public trust.

Community education programs will also be part of the plan. These programs will teach residents how to spot and avoid explosive ordnance. Such initiatives will reduce accidents and save lives.

Experts emphasize that Iraq now has a stronger system to tackle explosive hazards. By training personnel, enhancing operations, and spreading awareness, Iraq can manage its mine risks more effectively.

China’s contribution strengthens Iraq’s safety, resilience, and recovery. By addressing explosive ordnance across the country, Iraq can rebuild communities, restore public spaces, and protect citizens.

Overall, this step marks a key milestone in Iraq’s mine action work. The partnership highlights how international cooperation can reduce danger, support reconstruction, and promote lasting development.
