Iraq has taken an important step to strengthen its electricity supply by expanding the Bismayah power plant. On Monday, the government officially launched a new 300 MW unit at the Bismayah gas-fired power plant. This expansion pushes the plant’s total capacity to around 5,000 MW. Experts say the Bismayah power plant expansion plays a crucial role in addressing the country’s persistent summer power shortages.
Developed through cooperation with international companies General Electric (GE) and Turkey’s ENKA, the Bismayah power plant is one of the largest power facilities in Iraq. The Bismayah power plant expansion is crucial as energy analysts emphasize that the plant’s increased output is essential to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity in Iraq’s cities. This rising demand will require billions of dollars in new investments to ensure reliable power supply.
In addition to this project, Baghdad recently signed agreements with US companies GE Vernova and UGT Renewables. These deals aim to develop 24,000 MW of gas-fired capacity alongside 3,000 MW of solar power projects. Officials highlight that these initiatives will reduce dependence on imported electricity, mainly from Iran, and help modernize Iraq’s energy infrastructure.
Currently, Iraq’s electricity grid generates about 26,000 MW during peak hours. However, this amount falls short of the estimated 34,000 MW needed during the hottest months. Therefore, the Bismayah power plant expansion offers vital relief in improving grid stability and reducing power cuts during peak demand.
Overall, the Bismayah power plant expansion marks a significant milestone in Iraq’s efforts to build a stronger and more sustainable power system. The government plans to continue investing in similar projects to meet the energy needs of its population and support economic growth.
