Bahrain’s ICT Governance Committee Discusses Key IT Projects and Open Data Policy Updates

Bahrain’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Governance Committee held its 76th meeting via videoconference. The session was chaired by Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, the Chief Executive of the Information and eGovernment Authority. During the meeting, committee members discussed key IT projects and purchases totaling approximately BD 3 million.

The committee first reviewed several important projects submitted by government entities. Among these was a comprehensive project for upgrading the telephone system in government hospitals. This project will implement Internet Protocol (IP) technology, utilizing cloud services. By doing so, it will reduce operational costs while improving network expansion. The new system will allow for centralized, remote management, which will streamline operations.

The committee also examined other significant IT projects, including the University of Bahrain’s Exam Monitoring System and the National Bureau for Revenue’s tax data analysis platform. These initiatives are crucial in enhancing the technological infrastructure within Bahrain’s government entities. Additionally, the committee reviewed the IT Services Management System proposed by the Information and eGovernment Authority.

Furthermore, the committee discussed the updated version of the Open Data Policy. This policy is designed to enhance government transparency and accountability. It aims to make non-sensitive government data available to the public, allowing citizens, researchers, and entrepreneurs to use the information to innovate and improve services. The updated policy includes several key improvements, such as providing data in machine-readable, open formats. This will make it easier to reuse and process data.

Additionally, the committee focused on aligning the policy with global standards, such as the ODIN global index and the United Nations’ E-Government Development Index. These improvements will ensure that Bahrain’s open data initiatives remain at the forefront of international best practices. This commitment reflects the government’s dedication to fostering innovation and sustainable development through greater data accessibility.

In conclusion, Bahrain’s ICT Governance Committee continues to prioritize transparency and technological advancement. The committee’s discussions on enhancing data accessibility and the development of key IT projects show the government’s commitment to modernizing its digital infrastructure. Through these efforts, Bahrain aims to improve public services, boost innovation, and ensure more efficient governance.
