Bahrain continues to expand its regional influence through parliamentary diplomacy in Asia as it prepares to host major Asian Parliamentary Assembly meetings. The event will take place from January 24 to 28. It brings together lawmakers and parliamentary leaders from across the continent.
Ahmed Sabah Al-Salloum said the meetings confirm Bahrain’s strong standing in Asia. He stressed that the country has proven its ability to host complex regional and international events. Moreover, he noted that Bahrain consistently delivers well-organized political gatherings.
He explained that hosting the 16th Plenary Session reflects Bahrain’s long-term commitment to cooperation. Additionally, it highlights the country’s role in strengthening parliamentary dialogue across Asia. He added that such meetings support stability and shared development goals.
The assembly will welcome speakers and members from parliaments and legislative councils across Asia. Furthermore, it will include representatives from parliamentary unions and related organizations. As a result, the meetings will offer wide political and cultural representation.
Organizers expect more than 190 participants from over 27 member states. At the same time, several other parliamentary bodies will attend. Therefore, the gathering will rank among the largest Asian parliamentary meetings this year.
The session will focus on promoting dialogue among cultures and civilizations in Asia. It will also explore challenges facing cooperation and future paths for engagement. Consequently, discussions will aim to encourage mutual understanding among diverse societies.
The agenda includes plenary sessions and executive council meetings. In addition, standing committees will hold specialized discussions. Bilateral meetings will also take place throughout the event. These meetings will strengthen coordination and improve legislative cooperation.
Economic and development issues will receive strong attention during the meetings. The Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development Committee will review three draft resolutions. First, members will discuss financial policies supporting economic growth. Second, they will address water and sanitation access across Asia. Third, they will examine halal economic principles for inclusive development.
These discussions aim to align economic policies with ethical and sustainable frameworks. Furthermore, lawmakers will exchange legislative experiences to support long-term regional growth.
The meetings will also mark the 20th anniversary of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly. The organization was founded in 2006. Since then, it has worked to promote cooperation among Asian parliaments. Bahrain has played an active role throughout this period.
During the event, Bahrain will chair a Gulf Cooperation Council coordination meeting. Parliamentary delegation heads from GCC states will attend. They will consult on shared positions and regional priorities. As a result, Gulf voices will enter Asian discussions with unified perspectives.
Bahrain has previously held key leadership roles within the assembly. Last year, it secured the presidency during the 15th plenary session in Baku. Earlier, Bahraini representatives also participated in executive meetings held in Turkey.
Overall, the upcoming session highlights Bahrain’s consistent engagement in parliamentary diplomacy in Asia. It also reinforces the country’s role as a bridge for dialogue. Through cooperation and dialogue, Bahrain continues to support stability and progress. In doing so, it strengthens parliamentary diplomacy in Asia across the continent.
