Bahrain Medical City and Dr. Haifa Eye Hospital recently launched a glaucoma awareness campaign to educate the public about eye health. The event took place at The Avenues Mall in Bahrain, aiming to raise awareness about the risks of glaucoma and the importance of early detection.
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) supported this initiative. It featured health education sessions and free eye screenings. The Ministry of Health’s Undersecretary, Dr. Lulwa Rashid Showaiter, attended to mark the event’s significance.
Dr. Ahmed Al Meer, a glaucoma expert and MUB graduate, led the campaign. He trained at the University of Toronto, specializing in glaucoma surgery. His guidance emphasized the need for early detection and regular check-ups.
RCSI Bahrain students also played a key role. They volunteered to guide attendees, conduct eye screenings, and educate them about the importance of regular eye examinations. Their involvement created a bridge between students and the local community.
Professor Catherine Strachan from RCSI Bahrain highlighted the partnership’s value. She stressed that such campaigns are essential to public health. Additionally, she pointed out that the importance of regular eye examinations cannot be overstated.
For three days, attendees participated in educational activities. They learned that glaucoma can develop without symptoms and lead to blindness if untreated. The campaign specifically targeted individuals over 40 and those with a family history of eye disease, urging them to get checked regularly.
Dr. Al Meer reiterated the importance of engaging directly with the public. By offering screenings and health education, the campaign aimed to inspire people to take preventative measures. The importance of regular eye examinations was his central message throughout the event.
This campaign demonstrates Bahrain’s commitment to public health and preventative care. By focusing on the importance of regular eye examinations, it encourages early detection, which can save sight. Through collaboration, screenings, and education, Bahrain continues to promote proactive healthcare for its citizens.
