Baghdad and Erbil Unite to Tackle Human Trafficking Surge Across Iraq

Baghdad and Erbil continue to strengthen their coordination in the fight against human trafficking across Iraq. Officials from both governments confirmed ongoing cooperation to address the rise in trafficking cases throughout the country.

Mustafa al-Yasiri, head of Iraq’s Anti-Human Trafficking Directorate, said Baghdad and Erbil maintain an active cooperation framework. The committee, led by the interior minister, includes 23 representatives from national and regional institutions. This framework ensures quick information exchange and efficient transfer of wanted individuals between both sides.

The spokesperson for Iraq’s interior ministry also praised the Kurdistan Regional Government’s cooperation on security issues. He said Erbil plays a vital role in intelligence sharing and suspect extraditions, especially in the fight against human trafficking. Their teamwork continues to strengthen national unity and improve public safety.

Iraq has also expanded its coordination with international partners. Officials confirmed close contact with Sweden regarding a suspect’s extradition. Iraq promptly provided all requested details, demonstrating transparency and responsibility. Such cooperation highlights Iraq’s growing commitment to justice and international stability.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Office of the Coordinator for International Advocacy released new data on trafficking cases. According to the report, trafficking incidents almost doubled in the Kurdistan Region in 2024. Authorities recorded 396 cases, showing a clear need for stronger preventive measures.

Sex trafficking rose from nine cases in 2021 to 25 in 2024. Organ trafficking increased from 54 cases in 2022–2023 to 103 in 2024. Security forces arrested 79 suspects last year during active operations targeting criminal networks.

Despite existing challenges, Iraq continues to push forward. The 2012 Anti-Human Trafficking Law supports these efforts, but success depends on consistent coordination. With solid teamwork and firm strategies, Iraq moves closer to ending this problem.

Baghdad and Erbil’s collaboration represents real progress in the fight against human trafficking. Their ongoing partnership shows determination, resilience, and hope for a safer Iraq.
