Local Grapes Take Center Stage at Ankawa Festival

The fourth annual Grape Basket Festival opened Tuesday at a model farm in Ankawa, Erbil province. Local grapes took center stage as farmers, residents, and members of the Christian community gathered for the event. Organizers said the festival aims to strengthen agriculture while promoting locally grown products. The event also seeks to create wider market opportunities for farmers across the region.

The festival takes place at the Selwan Sardar Model Farm, which hosts the annual agricultural gathering. Visitors can explore different grape varieties alongside other locally produced agricultural goods during the event. Furthermore, organizers aim to encourage consumers to choose products grown and produced within Iraq. They also want farmers to improve production methods and increase the efficiency of their agricultural operations.

The event provides farmers with an opportunity to present their harvest directly to consumers and visitors. At the same time, it highlights the diversity and quality of agricultural products produced around Ankawa. Consequently, organizers hope greater public interest will encourage stronger demand for locally produced food. Moreover, increased demand could help farmers expand production and reach additional markets.

The festival also carries significance for local communities that participate in Ankawa’s agricultural and cultural activities. Farmers, residents, and representatives of the Christian community attended the opening ceremony Tuesday. Their participation reflected the event’s broader role beyond simply displaying agricultural products. Instead, the festival combines farming, community engagement, local commerce, and support for producers.

Farm owner Selwan Sardar said organizing the festival for a fourth consecutive year carries broader meaning. He described the annual gathering as an opportunity to demonstrate farmers’ determination despite challenges facing the agricultural sector. According to Sardar, the event also represents optimism about the future of farming in the region. He emphasized that continued investment and support could strengthen local agricultural production.

Sardar also highlighted efforts to introduce modern farming methods at the model farm. These techniques aim to improve productivity while demonstrating the potential of local agricultural land. In addition, he stressed that farmers can produce high-quality grapes when they receive adequate support. He therefore called for stronger consumer demand and better access to markets.

Local grapes remain among the products receiving particular attention during this year’s festival. However, organizers also included other agricultural products to showcase the wider capabilities of local producers. This broader presentation allows visitors to discover different products while supporting farmers directly. Meanwhile, the event encourages greater recognition of locally produced goods among consumers.

The festival comes as farmers across Iraq continue facing challenges involving production costs and market access. Nevertheless, agricultural events can provide producers with opportunities to connect with customers and promote their products. Furthermore, they can help strengthen relationships between farmers, consumers, businesses, and local communities. Such connections may eventually support more sustainable agricultural activity across the region.

The fourth edition also demonstrates the organizers’ intention to establish the festival as an annual agricultural event. Each edition provides another opportunity to promote farming and encourage consumers to support local producers. At the same time, the gathering highlights the potential of modern agricultural practices in Kurdistan Region. Consequently, the festival seeks to combine economic opportunities with community participation and agricultural development.

As the event continues, organizers hope visitors will discover the quality and variety of locally produced goods. They also want increased consumer support to translate into stronger opportunities for farmers. Ultimately, local grapes and other agricultural products remain central to the festival’s message. The event therefore presents agriculture as both an economic activity and a source of community resilience.
