Qatar has achieved a major milestone in media rights, advancing five places in the 2025 RSF World Press Freedom Index. This marks the third consecutive year of improvement for the country in this global ranking, overcoming very serious challenges that have previously hindered progress.
Qatar now ranks 79th worldwide, its best ranking to date. It also leads the Middle East region in press freedom, surpassing countries like Israel. This noteworthy progress hasn’t been easy; Qatar overcame serious and very difficult obstacles to improve conditions for media professionals.
Although the wider Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remains difficult for journalism, Qatar continues to make notable strides. In fact, Qatar is the only country in the region not classified as being in a “very serious” or “difficult” situation. This press freedom progress is especially significant when viewed against regional trends.
The RSF report cited many setbacks worldwide, including economic challenges facing media organizations. These financial pressures have pushed the global press freedom score into “difficult” territory for the first time. While violent attacks often receive the most attention, RSF emphasized that financial hardship is a more subtle but equally dangerous threat.
Globally, economic constraints are eroding press freedom and limiting journalistic independence. Many news organizations struggle to remain sustainable, especially in areas facing digital disruption. However, Qatar appears to be resisting this very serious negative trend through targeted improvements.
