Qatar Committed to Ending Gaza War Despite Challenges

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to mediating an end to the war in Gaza. This is despite ongoing obstacles and political pressure.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday, the Prime Minister stressed that negotiations have never ceased. Qatar, alongside partners such as Egypt and the United States, is working towards advancing the second phase of a ceasefire deal. He revealed that Hamas is prepared to release all Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. However, this is under conditions Israel is unlikely to accept.

Highlighting Qatar’s role, Sheikh Mohammed denounced recent attempts to malign mediators. He emphasized that such campaigns would not deter Qatar’s efforts. He also addressed concerns over the humanitarian situation, criticizing Israel’s continued blockade of aid into Gaza since March 2.

Regarding accusations tied to “QatarGate” and claims of supporting university protests, the Prime Minister dismissed them as unfounded political propaganda. He reiterated that Qatar’s contributions to academic institutions are transparent and officially sanctioned.

On regional matters, Sheikh Mohammed welcomed Omani-led mediation efforts between Iran and the United States. He expressed support for Syrian reconciliation efforts, calling for the lifting of sanctions to aid Syria’s recovery.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan echoed Qatar’s positions. He stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He also supported the two-state solution and opposed any actions undermining Syria’s unity.
