The Bahrain Space Agency recently organized the Data Cosmos Hackathon. It partnered with Bahrain Polytechnic and Open Cosmos, a UK-based company. The event took place at Bahrain Polytechnic. Over seventy participants from various university disciplines and business sectors attended. Seventeen teams competed, showcasing their talent and creativity.
The hackathon aimed to help participants use satellite data and artificial intelligence to address environmental sustainability challenges. It encouraged innovative thinking and collaboration across multiple fields. By utilizing space data, participants contributed to Bahrain’s goal of meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover, the hackathon promoted the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the space science sector. Participants were encouraged to transform their ideas into viable business models.
Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Asiri, CEO of the Bahrain Space Agency, expressed his satisfaction with the turnout. He noted that the hackathon’s success reflected the Agency’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the importance of space technology. “This event is part of our long-term goal to position Bahrain as a leader in the space sector,” he said. “We aim to create a sustainable space industry that supports the national economy and provides high-income job opportunities for youth.”
Dr. Al Asiri also thanked Bahrain Polytechnic and Open Cosmos for their essential contributions. Their support helped ensure the event’s success. These partnerships, he explained, help promote the use of space technology and provide participants with valuable experiences.
Bahrain Polytechnic’s CEO, Professor Kieran Okahon, emphasized the significance of the event. He said the Polytechnic is dedicated to fostering scientific innovation. The hackathon offers students the chance to enhance their research skills and explore new fields. “We are proud to collaborate with the Bahrain Space Agency on such an impactful event,” Okahon added.
Alberto Perez-Casinelli, Vice President of Open Cosmos UK, shared his pride in partnering with the Bahrain Space Agency. He stressed the importance of satellite technology in tackling global challenges. “This event highlights the role of digital transformation and artificial intelligence in enhancing sustainability and productivity,” he said.
The Data Cosmos Hackathon marks an important step in Bahrain’s space sector. It encourages innovation while aligning with the country’s broader economic goals, including Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030. By engaging in space science, participants help build a brighter future for Bahrain and the world.
