In a strong example of youth-driven innovation, a student startup from Sultan Qaboos University is making waves in the industrial sector. Cerbal, founded by a team of students, has developed a cutting-edge solution to one of industry’s biggest problems—iron corrosion.
This initiative reflects Oman’s growing national focus on empowering youth and promoting creativity in education. Cerbal shows how students can transform classroom knowledge into practical solutions that support economic growth and sustainability.
Cerbal’s mission is both environmental and industrial. The startup developed a special anti-corrosion coating that also insulates against heat and electricity. Most notably, the formula uses 70 to 80 percent natural rocks often overlooked in the Omani environment.
Aya bint Ahmed Al Balushi, the project’s development and production manager, explained the inspiration behind Cerbal. The team observed how corrosion in sectors like oil, gas, and water causes major financial and environmental damage. This sparked a question: could nature offer a better solution?
Driven by this challenge, the students began researching alternatives. Their answer came in the form of locally sourced minerals, offering a sustainable and affordable coating product.
The startup targets companies in key industries including oil, gas, construction, desalination, and seaports. Government infrastructure bodies are also seen as potential clients.
Despite the innovation, the team has faced real challenges. These include limited expertise in industrial coatings and competition from long-established companies. Also, market resistance to unfamiliar products remains a hurdle.
However, with full support from Sultan Qaboos University, the students overcame many obstacles. They gained access to labs, expert guidance, and scientific mentoring, which helped refine their work.
To prove the product’s reliability, they tested it under simulated real-world conditions. They also collected feedback from industry professionals to enhance the formula and improve its market appeal.
Aya highlighted that Cerbal aims to do more than create a product. The team wants to build an ecosystem where youth-driven innovation leads to sustainable local solutions.
Looking ahead, the startup hopes to reduce Oman’s reliance on imported materials by using native resources in high-tech industries. Cerbal stands as a model for how youth-driven innovation can solve real-world problems and contribute to national development.
