Saudi Arabia Celebrates National Flag Day, Honoring Strength and Unity

Saudi Arabia is commemorating its National Flag Day on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, coinciding with Ramadan 11, reaffirming the nation’s sovereignty, unity, and historical legacy.

Flag Day marks the anniversary of King Abdul Aziz’s approval of the modern Saudi flag on Dhul Hijjah 27, 1355 AH (March 11, 1937). The annual celebration was established in 2023 by a royal decree from King Salman, underscoring the flag’s significance as a symbol of justice, strength, and prosperity.

The Saudi flag’s origins date back to the first Saudi state in 1727, evolving through the years while maintaining its core elements— the green background, the Islamic creed (“There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”), and the sword, signifying justice and security. Its final design, adopted in 1937, remains a powerful emblem of national pride.

Distinctive among world flags, the Saudi flag is never lowered to half-mast, wrapped around the deceased, or used for commercial purposes, ensuring it remains a revered national symbol.

Flag Day serves as a reminder of Saudi Arabia’s deep-rooted history, its commitment to unity, and the leadership’s dedication to preserving the nation’s heritage and values.
