Consumer Protection Authority Seizes Over 115,000 Violating Products in 2024

The Consumer Protection Authority seized more than 115,000 products in violation of regulations during 2024. These violations spanned various sectors, with expired products accounting for the largest share. Over 41,000 expired items were confiscated, and Dhofar Governorate saw the highest number, with 48% of the total.

In addition to expired products, the circulation of other items was banned. The authority seized more than 16,000 such items, with Dhofar also ranking first in this category, accounting for 66% of the total seizures.

The authority also focused on chewing and smokeless tobacco products, seizing more than 15,000 items. Muscat Governorate led in this area, with 43% of the products seized.

Furthermore, the Consumer Protection Authority confiscated over 10,000 clothing items that violated public decency. North Al Sharqiyah Governorate had the highest number of these seizures, accounting for 52% of the total.

The circulation of electronic cigarettes and shisha products was also banned. Over 7,000 of these items were seized, with Muscat leading again, making up 99% of the total seizures.

The overall number of seized products in 2024 saw an 18% decrease compared to 2023. This decline was particularly notable in sectors such as standards and measurements, where seizures dropped by 95%. The chewing and smokeless tobacco sector saw a 48% reduction, and the counterfeit and imitation sector saw a 49% drop.

Authorities attribute this decline to increased awareness among suppliers and their greater commitment to regulatory laws. These efforts have helped safeguard consumer rights and reduce violations.

The Consumer Protection Authority reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regulatory and inspection efforts. It continues to work to ensure a safe market for consumers and protect their rights. The authority also encourages consumers to report violations through various communication channels.
