Shura Council Approves Draft Law to Boost Innovation

The Shura Council has given its approval to a draft law aimed at supporting innovation and scientific research. Following an in-depth discussion on the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee’s report, the Council referred the legislation to the government for further action.

The decision was made during the Council’s regular weekly session, chaired by Speaker HE Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim. At the start of the session, the Council praised His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his participation in the extraordinary Arab Summit on March 4 in Cairo. The summit, held at a critical moment, focused on the latest developments in the Palestinian crisis.

The Council emphasized Qatar’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and its commitment to international efforts aimed at halting the aggression on Gaza. It also welcomed the summit’s outcomes, which reinforced a unified Arab stance in favor of the Palestinian cause. The summit rejected any forced displacement or demographic changes. The final declaration reaffirmed the need for a lasting peace based on a two-state solution. This includes an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.

Following this, Secretary-General HE Nayef bin Mohammed Al Mahmoud presented the session’s agenda. After that, the minutes of the previous session were approved.

The Council also reviewed its participation in the 36th meeting of the Executive Committee of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU). This meeting took place in Cairo in December 2024. Additionally, the Council approved six requests to extend the work of its standing committees. This allows them to continue studying key issues referred to them.

The approval of the innovation and scientific research law marks a significant step toward fostering a knowledge-based economy in Qatar. The legislation is expected to provide stronger support for researchers, entrepreneurs, and institutions, encouraging advancements across various sectors.
