Lebanese President Travels to Saudi Arabia for First Overseas Trip

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has embarked on his first international trip since assuming office earlier this year. On Monday, he traveled from Rafic Hariri International Airport to Riyadh, marking Saudi Arabia as his first destination. The Lebanese presidency confirmed the trip on the platform “X” and noted that Aoun would be accompanied by Lebanon’s foreign minister and the country’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Aoun expressed that he chose Saudi Arabia due to its “historic links” with Lebanon and its influential role in the region and globally. In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, he explained his expectations for the visit, saying he hoped Saudi Arabia would assist Lebanon in resetting bilateral relations. He emphasized the importance of overcoming recent obstacles between the two nations, aiming for a fresh start built on mutual interests.

The Lebanese president also voiced his aspirations for strengthening economic ties with Saudi Arabia, aligning Lebanon with Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Vision 2030. He highlighted that such collaboration could lead to the return of Saudis to Lebanon, while Lebanese citizens also look forward to reconnecting with the Kingdom.

Since taking office in January, President Aoun has committed to establishing a new phase in Lebanon’s governance, focusing on rebuilding the state’s authority and ensuring that the Lebanese state holds a “monopoly on weapons.”

In conclusion, this visit represents a significant step in efforts to restore Lebanon’s relationship with Saudi Arabia and foster economic and political cooperation.
