Qatar Calls for Greater Global Support for Afghanistan

Geneva – Qatar has urged the international community to step up financial and technical assistance for Afghanistan to ensure a better quality of life for its people. The country emphasized that achieving lasting peace and sustainable development is crucial for improving conditions in Afghanistan.

Mishal Al Mansouri, Third Secretary at the Human Rights Department of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered the statement in Geneva on Friday. Speaking during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council, he highlighted Qatar’s commitment to humanitarian and diplomatic efforts.

“Qatar remains an active international partner, supporting mediation efforts and hosting three meetings of special envoys on Afghanistan under UN auspices. We continue to provide humanitarian and development support to ease the suffering of the Afghan people,” Al Mansouri stated.

He reaffirmed Qatar’s focus on human rights, particularly the empowerment of Afghan women. He stressed the need for greater inclusion of women in peacebuilding efforts and ensuring their access to education and employment.

Qatar’s initiatives include the Women in Conflict Zones program, led by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD). Last December, QFFD signed the second phase of an agreement supporting Afghan women’s economic empowerment through traditional weaving and crafts.

Additionally, in October 2024, Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia to provide scholarships for Afghan students. This initiative aims to help young Afghans build a more stable and prosperous future.

Qatar’s appeal to the global community underscores its ongoing efforts to support Afghanistan through both humanitarian aid and diplomatic engagement.
