Basrah Crude Falls as Global Oil Prices Rise

Basrah Crude prices declined on Wednesday even as international benchmarks Brent and West Texas Intermediate posted gains. The movement created a clear divergence between Iraqi crude grades and major global oil benchmarks.

Basrah Heavy fell 1.46 percent during the latest assessment, reaching $67.34 per barrel. Meanwhile, Basrah Medium declined 1.40 percent and settled at $70.64 per barrel. Both Iraqi grades therefore recorded losses of around $1 per barrel during the session.

The decline in Basrah grades contrasted with stronger performance across the major international oil benchmarks. Brent crude increased by 90 cents, representing a gain of 0.89 percent. As a result, Brent reached $101.48 per barrel during the latest market assessment.

West Texas Intermediate also moved higher during the session, gaining 75 cents overall. The increase represented a rise of 0.84 percent, bringing WTI to $90.19 per barrel. Therefore, both major benchmarks recorded positive movements while Iraq’s Basrah grades moved lower.

The contrasting performance highlights different price movements across crude grades during the latest trading period. Iraqi producers and international market participants continued tracking the changing values of regional and global crude. However, the available assessment did not provide a specific reason for Basrah’s decline.

Basrah Heavy recorded the larger percentage decrease among the two Iraqi grades. Its price dropped below the previous assessment after losing 1.46 percent. Basrah Medium followed with a slightly smaller decline of 1.40 percent during the same period.

Basrah Crude remained lower despite the gains recorded by Brent and WTI. The divergence placed Iraqi grades on a different trajectory from the two widely followed international benchmarks. Consequently, the latest figures showed mixed conditions across major crude markets.

Regional crude grades also experienced declines during the latest assessment. Saudi Arab Light dropped 1.36 percent to reach $95.62 per barrel. The movement placed the Saudi grade alongside Basrah crude among the regional varieties recording losses.

The UAE’s Murban crude also moved lower during the latest assessment. Murban declined to $106.19 per barrel, although the available figures did not specify its percentage change. Its movement added another decline among several regional crude grades.

Meanwhile, Brent continued trading above the $100 per barrel level following its latest increase. WTI also maintained a significant price difference compared with Brent after recording its gain. The two benchmarks therefore continued showing stronger performance than the Iraqi grades.

The latest figures provide a snapshot of price differences across several important crude varieties. Basrah Heavy and Basrah Medium both declined, while Brent and WTI moved higher. Regional grades from Saudi Arabia and the UAE also recorded downward movements.

For Iraq’s Basrah grades, the latest assessment marked a weaker session despite gains elsewhere. Market participants therefore have continued reason to monitor price movements across different crude qualities. Differences between regional grades and international benchmarks can shift during individual trading sessions.

Basrah Crude also remains an important reference for assessing the performance of Iraq’s crude varieties. The latest figures showed that its two reported grades did not follow Brent or WTI. Instead, both Basrah Heavy and Basrah Medium recorded declines during Wednesday’s assessment.

The latest market data also showed significant differences in absolute prices among the reported crude grades. Murban traded at $106.19 per barrel, while Brent reached $101.48. Saudi Arab Light stood at $95.62, with Basrah Medium at $70.64 and Basrah Heavy at $67.34.

These figures demonstrate the wide range of prices recorded across the different crude varieties. However, individual grades reflect their own market conditions and pricing assessments. Therefore, movements in international benchmarks do not always produce identical changes across regional grades.

Basrah Crude finished the latest assessment lower, while global benchmarks recorded moderate increases. Brent gained 0.89 percent, and WTI advanced 0.84 percent during the session. In contrast, Basrah Heavy and Basrah Medium declined by 1.46 percent and 1.40 percent respectively.

The mixed performance leaves investors and market participants watching subsequent assessments for further direction. Future price movements will show whether the divergence between Iraqi grades and international benchmarks continues. For now, the latest figures point to a weaker performance from Iraq’s Basrah crude grades.
