Kuwait Switzerland Ties reached their 60th anniversary as senior officials met in Bern to discuss stronger cooperation. Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah visited Switzerland on Tuesday for official talks with President Guy Parmelin. The visit coincided with ceremonies marking six decades since Kuwait and Switzerland established diplomatic relations. Both sides highlighted their longstanding relationship and discussed opportunities to broaden cooperation across several sectors.
The Crown Prince received an official welcome at Lohn Palace, where Kuwait and Switzerland’s national anthems played. He subsequently exchanged greetings with senior Swiss officials and members of Kuwait’s accompanying delegation. During the visit, officials from both countries witnessed the signing of a memorandum promoting direct investment. The agreement aims to create broader opportunities for economic cooperation and strengthen connections between investors.
The memorandum was signed by Sheikh Dr Meshaal Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah for Kuwait’s investment promotion authority. Magali Herrault signed for Swiss Global Investment House, representing the Swiss side. Meanwhile, official talks brought together the Crown Prince and President Parmelin to review bilateral relations. Their discussions covered ways to expand partnerships while serving the shared interests of both countries.
Economic cooperation featured prominently during the discussions, with both governments identifying several areas offering potential for future collaboration. These areas include healthcare, financial technology, sustainable agriculture and food security, according to Switzerland’s official account. The two countries also maintain an established legal framework supporting economic relations and cross-border investment. That framework includes agreements covering trade, taxation and bilateral investment between the two sides.
In addition, Kuwait and Switzerland have developed cooperation in humanitarian and development assistance. Both countries have supported joint initiatives and contributed to international humanitarian efforts through established institutions. Swiss Ambassador to Kuwait Tiziano Balmelli described the Crown Prince’s visit as an important moment for bilateral relations. He said the relationship combines longstanding friendship with opportunities for future cooperation across strategic sectors.
Furthermore, officials have highlighted growing links involving business, tourism, research and air connectivity. Direct flights and easier travel arrangements have contributed to increased movement between Kuwait and Switzerland. The two countries also cooperate through business forums designed to connect companies and encourage investment opportunities. Swiss officials have expressed interest in strengthening commercial engagement and encouraging companies to explore opportunities in Kuwait.
Kuwait Switzerland Ties have also developed through humanitarian cooperation and international initiatives. Both countries have supported development and humanitarian activities while maintaining dialogue on international issues. The relationship includes cooperation involving scientific research, including links between Kuwaiti companies and Swiss academic institutions. These partnerships provide another channel for developing expertise and strengthening institutional connections.
The 60th anniversary also recalls earlier periods of cooperation between the two countries. Swiss officials have pointed to Switzerland’s support for Kuwaiti families during the 1990 Iraqi invasion and occupation. During that crisis, Swiss authorities extended residence arrangements for hundreds of Kuwaiti families. They also facilitated schooling for Kuwaiti children who remained in Switzerland during the conflict.
More recently, Switzerland and Kuwait marked the anniversary through reciprocal high-level visits during 2026. President Parmelin visited Kuwait in February before the Crown Prince travelled to Switzerland in September. The latest discussions also addressed international developments, including situations affecting Iraq and Gaza. Switzerland and Kuwait said humanitarian conditions and international cooperation remain important areas for continued engagement.
Kuwait Switzerland Ties therefore enter their seventh decade with investment and trade among key areas. Officials from both sides have indicated that additional cooperation could develop across economic, humanitarian and international fields.
