Saudi Arabia Condemns Attacks in Iraqi Kurdistan

Gulf condemnation intensified on Tuesday after Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar denounced attacks targeting senior officials in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.

Saudi Arabia issued its statement alongside the two Gulf countries, strongly rejecting attacks by armed groups against Iraqi officials and state institutions. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incidents as criminal acts and specifically referred to an attack targeting the office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

Riyadh called the incident a serious violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Saudi officials also rejected attacks against political figures and threats against Iraqi state institutions. Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its support for Iraq’s security, stability and sovereignty while stressing the importance of protecting Iraqi territory under international law.

The UAE separately condemned an attack targeting Barzani’s office in Erbil. Abu Dhabi also referred to an attack on the residence of the director of the Protection Agency. According to the UAE statement, two drones carried out the attacks, which Emirati officials described as a hostile Iranian attack.

Abu Dhabi called the strikes a serious violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also said the attacks threatened security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The UAE expressed full solidarity with Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government and supported measures aimed at protecting security and stability.

Qatar also condemned the attacks, saying they targeted the Kurdistan Region prime minister’s office and the residence of the head of its Security and Intelligence Agency. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry described the incidents as violations of Iraqi sovereignty and international law.

Doha called for restraint and urged regional parties to rely on dialogue and diplomacy. Qatar also warned against allowing the attacks to contribute to further regional instability. It reaffirmed its solidarity with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region while supporting measures designed to protect sovereignty and security.

Gulf condemnation brought similar concerns from three regional governments. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar each focused on Iraq’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the protection of state institutions.

Masrour Barzani, prime minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government, became a central figure in the statements. His office in Erbil was among the reported targets. Erbil, meanwhile, remains the administrative and political centre of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.

The reported drone attacks occurred amid heightened regional tensions. They also raised concerns about possible consequences for Iraq’s security environment and stability across neighbouring areas.

Saudi Arabia’s statement emphasised Iraq’s right to protect its territory. Riyadh also reiterated its support for Iraqi efforts to preserve national security and stability.

The UAE similarly expressed support for measures taken by Iraqi and Kurdish authorities. Abu Dhabi linked regional stability with respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Qatar focused particularly on preventing further escalation. Doha urged continued diplomatic engagement and called for restraint to limit wider regional consequences.

Gulf condemnation carries significance because Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar maintain relations with Iraq. Their statements also demonstrate continued attention to political and security developments inside the country.

For Iraqi authorities, statements from Gulf governments provide diplomatic support following attacks against senior regional officials. They also reinforce calls to protect political institutions and national sovereignty.

For regional governments, the incidents highlight continuing security concerns in Iraq. Further attacks could increase pressure for diplomatic engagement and additional security measures.

At the same time, Gulf governments have emphasised restraint rather than escalation. Their statements have focused on sovereignty, dialogue, diplomacy and regional stability.

No broader regional response was announced in the statements provided. Instead, officials focused on condemnation, solidarity with Iraq and calls for de-escalation.

Gulf condemnation could remain significant if attacks inside Iraq continue or create wider regional risks. However, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar have so far stressed diplomatic restraint.

The latest statements underline shared Gulf concern over Iraq’s security and sovereignty. They also reinforce calls to protect political institutions and prevent further regional escalation.
