Oman’s Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has warned of a growing risk of children being exploited through social media, calling for stronger legal protections and wider public awareness to address the issue.
The commission urged the introduction of dedicated legislation that would criminalize the digital exploitation of children while expanding child protection initiatives and awareness campaigns across the Sultanate.
The warning came as the OHRC highlighted progress in its monitoring and complaint-handling system over the past year. The commission said it had broadened its outreach to different groups in society, introduced more reporting channels, and strengthened cooperation with relevant authorities through regular field visits and follow-up measures.
According to the commission, it received and monitored 1,479 human rights-related cases during 2025. Each case was reviewed to verify the facts and determine the appropriate legal and administrative procedures, with the aim of resolving underlying issues in line with Omani laws and international human rights commitments.
The commission added that it continues to analyze complaints to identify recurring challenges and improve measures that protect individuals’ rights across the country.
