Iraq Condemns Turkey’s Remarks, Defends Sovereignty Amid Rising Tensions

Iraq’s territorial integrity has taken center stage after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made comments regarding Sinjar, Qandil, and Makhmour. Iraqi officials quickly condemned the remarks, emphasizing that Iraq alone decides its internal affairs. The Iraqi government stated that protecting Iraq’s territorial integrity remains a top priority in all diplomatic engagements.

During a recent interview, Fidan mentioned that these areas “will witness changes in the near future” following military operations in Syria. Iraq viewed the statement as interference and a breach of diplomatic norms. Baghdad responded firmly, asserting that the issue of Sinjar and other regions is a matter solely for Iraq.

The Turkish foreign ministry clarified that Fidan aimed to highlight threats posed by the PKK to Iraq’s territorial integrity and security. Officials added that Ankara supports eradicating terrorist organizations from Iraqi soil, similar to its operations in Syria. Nevertheless, Baghdad reaffirmed that external powers must respect Iraq’s sovereignty.

Iraq’s foreign ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador to express concern over the remarks. Authorities insisted that any military operations or statements affecting Iraqi regions without approval threaten regional stability. Meanwhile, Turkey described Fidan’s words as misunderstood due to translation errors, claiming the minister only referenced PKK members, not Iraqi residents.

The PKK, which carried out decades-long campaigns against Turkey, announced in 2025 that it would dissolve and pursue political means only. Despite this, Turkey continues to support military operations targeting PKK-linked groups in Iraq. Iraq, however, maintains that foreign involvement in its territory must be coordinated and lawful.

Analysts noted that Iraq’s response reflects its broader commitment to defending sovereignty and maintaining regional stability. By emphasizing Iraq’s territorial integrity, the government sends a clear message to neighboring countries about respecting borders. Experts also highlighted that ongoing tensions between Baghdad and Ankara could affect cooperation on security and counterterrorism initiatives.

Overall, Iraq’s government remains steadfast in protecting its lands. Iraqi officials have repeated that Iraq’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable. The statement reinforces Baghdad’s determination to manage internal matters independently and preserve peace for its citizens.
