The UAE Winter Olympics debut is set to inspire a new generation of athletes in the country. Alex Astridge and Piera Hudson will make history as the first athletes to represent the UAE at the Milan 2026 Winter Olympics. They will compete in alpine skiing, with Piera racing on February 15 and Alex on February 16.
Both athletes started skiing at Ski Dubai, showing that winter sports dreams can thrive even in a desert nation. Alex, a 19-year-old Heriot-Watt Dubai student, represented the UAE at the 2024 Junior Olympics. Therefore, he credits Ski Dubai for shaping his skills. “I started skiing at three years old,” he said. “Ski Dubai turned a life skill into an Olympic journey.”
Alex first competed internationally at the Junior Winter Olympics in South Korea. He finished 38th in the slalom event. However, that experience gave him a glimpse of the dedication required to reach senior Olympic levels. “Seeing athletes from around the world inspired me to aim higher,” he added.
Meanwhile, Piera Hudson followed a different path. Already an accomplished skier representing New Zealand at the 2012 Youth Olympics, she also moved to Dubai and joined Ski Dubai. There, she quickly adapted to the UAE winter sports community. “The support from Ski Dubai and the UAE Winter Federation made me feel at home,” she said. “It also prepared me for this Olympic journey.”
The UAE Winter Olympics debut is not just about results. It represents a broader goal: expanding the country’s presence in international sports beyond traditional disciplines. Both athletes aim to inspire young Emiratis to pursue winter sports. This shows that success is possible even in less popular disciplines.
Additionally, the visibility of UAE athletes at the Olympics can encourage future generations to explore winter sports. Alex and Piera hope their performance will pave the way for a larger UAE team at the 2030 Winter Olympics.
Furthermore, their participation highlights the UAE’s investment in sports infrastructure and talent development. It demonstrates the nation’s commitment to nurturing athletes in new disciplines.
In conclusion, the UAE Winter Olympics debut symbolizes ambition, perseverance, and a vision to inspire future winter athletes in a desert nation.
