Saudi Arabia Expands High-Speed Rail with Talgo Contract

Saudi Arabia continues to advance its transportation infrastructure as Talgo secures a major contract to supply and maintain high-speed trains in Saudi Arabia. The deal covers 20 new Talgo 250 trains, joining the 35 units already in service since 2018. These trains will operate on the Haramain line connecting Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah, improving passenger mobility across the Kingdom.

The contract, worth 1.3 billion euros, also includes full maintenance until 2033, with an option to extend to 2038. Talgo will ensure the trains remain fully operational, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to reliable rail transport. Each train consists of two locomotives and 13 coaches, offering 417 seats across two classes. Dedicated spaces for catering and passengers with reduced mobility improve comfort and accessibility.

All trains feature step-free interiors and platform-level access, streamlining boarding and disembarking. Talgo’s involvement extends beyond manufacturing to comprehensive maintenance services. This guarantees the long-term efficiency and reliability of high-speed trains in Saudi Arabia.

The contract was awarded by the Kingdom’s Ministries of Transportation-Logistics and Finance through the Spanish Consortium managing Phase II of the Haramain High-Speed Railway project. This initiative forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader plan to expand passenger services. The upgraded fleet will support millions of travelers and reduce travel times between holy cities and major urban centers.

Moreover, the expansion reflects Saudi Arabia’s focus on technological innovation and sustainable transport. Talgo ensures the trains meet high operational standards. Future projects may further enhance connectivity and passenger experiences, showing the importance of high-speed trains in Saudi Arabia for national development.

Talgo’s continued role demonstrates international collaboration in modernizing Saudi transport. Combining advanced Spanish rail technology with local operational management helps the Kingdom build a safe, efficient, and reliable high-speed rail network.
