Kurdistan Region Bans Roblox Over Child Safety Risks

The Kurdistan Region has banned the online game Roblox to protect children from harmful content and social risks. Authorities said child safety online is a top priority as internet use grows. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications ordered all licensed providers to comply with the ban in family internet packages.

Roblox allows users to play, create, and socialize in virtual worlds. However, reports have highlighted child safety online concerns. Children face exposure to explicit content, harassment, and electronic blackmail. Several countries, including Turkey, Russia, and Jordan, have already restricted the game over similar risks.

Kurdistan’s ban follows Baghdad’s nationwide decision last month. The Supreme Federal Court cited social and moral risks to minors. The ministry stressed that child safety online motivated the move after detailed studies and field monitoring.

Communications Minister Hayam al-Yasiri warned that Roblox exposes children to inappropriate behavior and harassment. She added that excessive gaming can isolate children, weaken social bonds, reduce physical activity, and harm health. Authorities urged families to supervise children’s online activities.

The ban aligns with earlier efforts to remove violent videos and inappropriate websites from family internet packages. Officials said protecting minors online requires strict rules and cooperation between telecom providers, parents, and schools.

Experts welcomed the decision, noting that online platforms strongly influence children’s behavior and social development. They argued that proactive policies like this help safeguard children while encouraging families to guide internet use responsibly.

The move highlights growing global concern over online gaming. Governments must balance digital access with protecting children. Authorities will continue monitoring platforms and adjust rules to ensure child safety online while allowing access to safe educational and recreational content.
