Bahrain Strengthens Water Cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Somalia

Bahrain is boosting regional ties through enhanced water resource management, as officials discuss joint initiatives with Saudi Arabia and Somalia. The focus on water resource management aims to improve efficiency, sustainability, and innovation across the Gulf and Horn of Africa regions.

On the sidelines of the fifth meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministers Responsible for Water in Jeddah. Bahrain’s Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs met with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture. They explored ways to expand collaboration in water resource management and enhance the efficiency of water systems. Both parties also discussed adopting modern technologies in production and distribution, sharing expertise in desalination, treatment, and reuse. In addition, they examined water and energy infrastructure projects to support regional water security.

The Bahraini minister highlighted Bahrain’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Saudi Arabia, noting the countries’ close relations and shared goals. He praised Saudi Arabia for leading regional initiatives that promote sustainable water use and long-term resource management. In turn, the Saudi minister welcomed Bahrain’s active participation, stressing the kingdom’s desire to exchange technical knowledge and expertise in water and energy to advance regional water security.

Bahrain’s minister also met with Somalia’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in water resource management. They reviewed joint projects to develop water networks, improve the efficiency of resource use, and advance desalination and storage technologies. Both sides emphasized leveraging Bahraini expertise in groundwater management and improving water quality.

During the meetings, officials agreed to form a joint technical team tasked with studying future cooperation opportunities. This team will focus on water network development, desalination, and the exchange of technical and administrative expertise. Such initiatives are expected to significantly contribute to sustainable water resource management in the participating countries.

Through these discussions, Bahrain underscores its commitment to regional collaboration and sustainable solutions. By prioritizing water resource management, the kingdom strengthens its role in promoting innovative practices. Experts say these efforts reflect a growing trend among countries in the Gulf and Horn of Africa to share knowledge, adopt technology, and safeguard essential resources for future generations.
