Trump Praises Barzani for Advancing Peace in the Middle East

US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, thanking him for supporting his peace initiatives. Trump stressed that ending violence and resolving conflicts in the Middle East remains a priority. Peace initiatives, is central to their ongoing cooperation.

In the letter, Trump reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to lasting peace, regional stability, and reducing tensions worldwide. He also wished President Barzani and his family success in their work.

Trump highlighted his achievements in ending conflicts, including the recent two-year war between Israel and Hamas. He described these accomplishments as part of his role as “the president of peace.”

President Barzani has played a major role in regional stability, especially in peace talks with Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The historic call by jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan to lay down arms ended a four-decade conflict. This conflict claimed tens of thousands of lives. Barzani also promoted unity among Kurdish parties in northern Syria, strengthening stability after Bashar al-Assad’s ouster.

The Kurdistan Region maintains close ties with both Washington and Tehran. Barzani expressed concerns about US-Iran tensions in Iraq while praising American support against ISIS.

Trump and Barzani met twice before: in January 2020 during the World Economic Forum in Davos and in December 2024 at the Notre Dame Cathedral reopening in Paris. The recent letter followed Barzani’s welcoming of Mark Savaya as the US Special Envoy for Iraq. This appointment highlighted Erbil’s role in regional stability.

The US has long supported the Kurdistan Region. Washington helped develop the Peshmerga forces, led the global coalition against ISIS, and backed ongoing reforms. Plans are also underway to open the largest US consulate in Erbil. Recently, a US trade delegation visited the region to explore investment and trade opportunities.

The correspondence between Trump and Barzani emphasizes shared goals of peace and cooperation. The focus on peace initiatives underlines their commitment to stability. Moving forward, both leaders aim to strengthen regional partnerships and promote safety for civilians.

Overall, the letter highlights collaboration, mutual trust, and the crucial role of peace initiatives in shaping the Middle East’s future.
