Rising Trend: UAE Families Embrace Homeschooling for Flexibility and Support

A growing number of UAE families are turning to homeschooling, driven by the desire for flexibility and personalized support. Homeschooling allows parents to focus on each child’s unique learning needs, making education more tailored and effective. Personalized learning support, reflects the growing demand for flexible educational options in the UAE.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, homeschooling has gained traction across the Emirates. Organizations like Duneha, the Gulf’s largest homeschooling association, have expanded their reach since 2006. Similarly, The Learning Link, founded by a British educator last year, now supports over 200 families, up from just a few clients initially.

Families increasingly seek homeschooling not only for neurodivergent children but also for young athletes, performers, and children whose parents travel frequently. Tutors provide varying levels of support, ranging from a few hours a week to full-time daily lessons. This flexibility is a major advantage, enabling children to learn in a way that suits their needs.

Kenyan mother and former teaching assistant Sue Nganga tutors her own sons using online programs from the US. She hires tutors only when she feels extra help is needed. Nganga explains that homeschooling involves continuous learning and adapting, much like outsourcing music lessons when a parent cannot play an instrument.

Educators emphasize that homeschooling provides a personalized learning support approach. Tutors can adapt lessons in real-time, observing how each child responds. This one-on-one attention allows children to thrive in ways traditional classrooms often cannot. Creative learning projects, such as supermarket visits or literary explorations, further enhance engagement.

Hybrid programs also offer flexibility. Entrepreneur Kanessa Muluneh enrolled her children in iCademy Middle East, a US-curriculum online school. Students can study at home or attend in-person sessions twice a week. This approach allows children to maintain education during travel while learning practical skills like entrepreneurship and personal finance.

Experts note that homeschooling improves well-being, sleep patterns, and energy levels. Neurodiversity coaches highlight that the UAE’s homeschooling environment supports children on the autism spectrum or with ADHD by providing customized learning experiences.

Socialization concerns are also evolving. Children interact within their communities, attend extracurricular activities, and participate in creative programs. Additionally, homeschooling can be more affordable, allowing families to invest in interest-based experiences, such as marine biology visits, instead of traditional school fees.

The increasing popularity of homeschooling in the UAE demonstrates a shift toward education that prioritizes each child’s needs. Families continue to value flexibility, creativity, and personalized learning support as central to their children’s success.
