Traditional Shooting Championship Opens in Dhofar

The Khareef Dhofar Championship for traditional shooting began today at the Command of the Sultan’s Armed Forces shooting ground in Raysut, Salalah. The event highlights Dhofar Municipality’s commitment to preserving heritage and promoting competitive sports during the Khareef season.

The championship will run until 29 August. It has already attracted attention for its scale, variety, and cultural importance. More than 1,900 competitors registered to participate. They represent different age groups and skill levels, which reflects the popularity of the sport.

Organizers included six major competitions in the program this year. Participants will compete in skeet target events, heavy rifle target shooting, skeet plate challenges, and heavy rifle plate contests. A special challenge cup will also test the accuracy and focus of top performers.

This year’s championship features a significant addition. A new category, heavy rifle targets with telescopic sights, entered the program. Officials explained that the new contest aims to expand opportunities and create a stronger competitive atmosphere. It also encourages more shooters to participate and test advanced skills.

The large number of entries demonstrates the growing enthusiasm for traditional shooting. Families, young athletes, and experienced marksmen all share the same stage. This strong participation emphasizes how the sport links generations and communities together.

Spectators can expect excitement as competitors showcase precision and discipline. The format ensures variety and sustained interest over the duration of the event. Transitioning between different types of shooting contests keeps the energy high throughout the program.

Beyond competition, the event carries cultural weight. Traditional shooting has deep roots in Omani history. By organizing this championship, Dhofar Municipality helps preserve the practice while adapting it to modern formats. This balance of heritage and innovation gives the event unique value.

Local officials stressed that the championship reinforces Dhofar’s role as a cultural hub. They highlighted its ability to attract visitors, generate pride, and showcase national traditions. The timing during the Khareef season further increases its appeal to residents and tourists.

Traditional shooting remains more than a sport. It is also a celebration of identity, cooperation, and community spirit. With strong participation and exciting contests, the Khareef Dhofar Championship ensures these values remain visible and vibrant.
