Iraq and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Drug Control Cooperation Through New Agreement

This week, Iraq and Saudi Arabia strengthen drug control cooperation with the signing of a new memorandum of understanding in Riyadh. The agreement aims to tackle drug production, trafficking, and distribution across borders.

Iraqi Health Minister Saleh Mahdi Al-Hasnawi and Saudi Interior Minister Abdulaziz bin Saud signed the agreement during an official meeting. Al-Hasnawi also leads Iraq’s National High Commission for Drug Control.

According to official sources, the agreement outlines 17 areas of collaboration. These include intelligence sharing, joint technical training, and early warning systems for drug threats.

In addition, both countries plan to coordinate drug prevention strategies. This will involve education campaigns and community-based awareness programs.

Furthermore, the memorandum covers judicial cooperation. Authorities will work closely with courts and law enforcement to ensure strict enforcement of anti-drug laws.

By working together, Iraq and Saudi Arabia aim to improve regional stability and public health. They see drug control as a shared responsibility requiring firm action.

Iraq and Saudi Arabia strengthen drug control cooperation as part of a broader regional security strategy. The two governments exchanged views on national drug policies during the meeting.

Data from Iraq’s General Directorate for Narcotics Control supports the urgency. In the first quarter of 2025, Iraq arrested 3,006 individuals for drug-related crimes. Courts issued 973 sentences during the same period.

Moreover, the country recorded over 19,000 drug-related arrests in 2023. Authorities seized more than 15 tons of narcotics. Seventeen suspects were killed during security operations.

From January to August 2024, Iraqi courts issued 140 death sentences and 500 life sentences for drug offenses. These figures highlight the scale of the crisis.

Clearly, the need for cooperation is greater than ever. Iraq and Saudi Arabia strengthen drug control cooperation to fight this growing threat with a united front.

In conclusion, both countries have pledged to continue their collaboration. They aim to protect communities and uphold justice through long-term coordination and decisive action.
