Strong Steps for Joint Security: New Representative Appointed

As part of strong steps for joint security, the Kurdistan Regional Government announced a key appointment on Thursday, August 7, 2025. The Ministry of Interior named Brigadier General Abdulsettar Yasin Zebari as the region’s new representative to the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.

He replaces General Abdulkhaleq Talat, who retired after reaching the legal age limit. Zebari officially assumed his new duties and pledged to represent the Kurdistan Regional Government with full dedication. He also promised to carry out all assigned military tasks with efficiency and discipline.

This appointment comes at a sensitive time. A joint investigative committee recently completed its report on the latest drone attack targeting Erbil. The findings were submitted to the Iraqi Prime Minister, who is expected to take further action soon.

According to Zebari, strong steps for joint security are now more important than ever. He emphasized the need for coordination within the Iraqi Joint Operations Command. Such cooperation, he added, would help prevent future drone attacks, especially those targeting the region’s vital oil infrastructure.

Zebari brings an extensive military and legal background. He was born in Akre on March 3, 1971. He graduated from the Baghdad Military Academy and the Faculty of Law at Salahaddin University. Since 1992, he has served in the Peshmerga forces, participating in key operations including the Iraq Liberation War and battles against ISIS. He was wounded three times in the line of duty but continued his service.

Before this appointment, Zebari served as the Director General of the Forest and Environment Police in Kurdistan. His field and administrative experience earned him wide respect among security forces.

This leadership change highlights the government’s commitment to taking strong steps for joint security. Both Erbil and Baghdad appear determined to enhance cooperation and prevent threats to national stability.
