Oyster Diving Race in Bahrain Revives Marine Heritage Traditions

The annual oyster diving race in Bahrain officially began Friday at the Hair Shattiyyah Marine Area. Around 100 amateur divers took part in this heritage event.

The race forms a key part of the eighth Nasser bin Hamad Marine Heritage Season. Organizers launched the season to revive traditional maritime practices. The oyster diving race in Bahrain reflects deep-rooted cultural ties and historical significance.

Ahead of the event, organizers held a coordination meeting with the participants. During the session, they outlined competition rules and safety procedures. Safety remained the top priority for all divers.

Participants dove using modern equipment to collect oysters from the sea floor. Judges later weighed and sorted the pearls inside, using traditional methods. A panel of experienced referees known as the “Tawawish” supervised the process.

Winners will also be selected based on the total weight of collected pearls. Only the top ten contestants will receive recognition for their achievements. This method keeps the competition fair and rooted in local customs.

Organizers emphasized that the event is more than a contest. The oyster diving race in Bahrain represents a living connection to the country’s heritage. Moreover, pearl diving once supported generations and built a strong part of national identity.

Furthermore, the event encourages young people to embrace cultural history. The Marine Heritage Season includes more than just diving. It also offers rowing races, fishing contests, and open water swimming events.

One unique addition this year is the Al-Nahham singing competition. Held at the Ministry of Information studios, it celebrates traditional sea chants. These chants were once sung by divers during long journeys.

Every element of the season aims to mix education with entertainment. This balance strengthens community ties and promotes a lasting appreciation for Bahrain’s history.

Thanks to widespread support, the program now stands among Bahrain’s top heritage events. Through continued youth involvement, the oyster diving race in Bahrain keeps tradition alive for future generations.
