Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic role has been pivotal in preventing further regional escalation, according to Iran’s ambassador to Riyadh. Dr. Alireza Enayati commended the Kingdom’s efforts in a recent interview, marking nearly two years since the two nations restored ties.
Enayati described the reconciliation as rapid and impactful. He noted that achievements typically requiring years were made in a short span. The ambassador, who previously served in Saudi Arabia decades ago, returned in 2023 after a China-brokered deal ended a seven-year rift.
When Israel struck Iranian nuclear facilities in June, regional reactions showcased solidarity. Enayati revealed that Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan was the first to call Iran in condemnation. Later, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed support in a phone call with Iran’s newly elected president.
“Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic role was honorable and effective,” Enayati emphasized. He praised Riyadh’s efforts to de-escalate tensions, adding that Tehran welcomes Saudi mediation. Religious tourism has surged since reconciliation. Over 400,000 Iranians visited Saudi Arabia for Umrah and Hajj this year. Enayati called this a positive sign of deepening ties.
However, economic cooperation still lags. The ambassador stressed the need for more trade agreements and infrastructure projects. Plans for overland transport corridors linking Saudi Arabia to Central Asia are under discussion.
A recent visit by Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman marked a turning point. Enayati said meetings with Iran’s leadership signaled a shift toward strategic collaboration. Both nations now see each other as partners in regional stability.
Furthermore, responding to criticism of Iran’s regional influence, Enayati dismissed accusations of meddling. “We are part of this region, not outsiders,” he asserted. He advocated dialogue over confrontation, stressing shared cultural and historical bonds.
The ambassador concluded that true security comes from economic development, not military dominance. Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic role, he said, proves that cooperation benefits the entire region.
