Al-Daqal Castle restored in Abha marks a significant step in preserving the region’s cultural identity. The Heritage Commission of the Ministry of Culture recently completed a restoration project to bring this historical fortress back to life. This effort aims to highlight the castle’s architectural authenticity and its vital role in Asir’s heritage.
Located on a mountain peak approximately 2,342 meters above sea level, Al-Daqal Castle restored offers a commanding view of the surrounding mountain paths. However, researchers estimate the castle was built over 110 years ago, around 1916 CE, making it a vital link to the past.
The restoration work carefully rebuilt damaged sections using original local stone. Additionally, the project cleaned and prepared interior corridors and chambers for visitors eager to explore the castle’s history. These efforts ensure the site remains true to its traditional design.
Al-Daqal Castle restored stands on a rugged rock foundation with a rectangular layout. The fortress measures about 43.6 meters long and 16 meters wide. In addition, it features a semi-circular northern façade and uses natural rock slopes for defense. The castle includes a command center, soldiers’ housing, and a service area.
One unique feature is a large stone oven once used by stationed forces. This oven, with a two-meter-wide opening and chimney, was essential for baking bread. The castle also contains a sealed grain storage chamber and a dedicated space for preparing the traditional Asir dish, haneeth.
Local craftsmen constructed the castle from granite for durability and used juniper wood for roofing. Moreover, the roof includes beams covered with reeds and a mixture of mud and straw for insulation. The outer walls received aesthetic and waterproof plaster layers.
With its reopening planned soon, Al-Daqal Castle restored will enrich Abha’s cultural landscape. The project promotes awareness of the Asir region’s archaeological heritage and attracts visitors to this historic site. This also restoration stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural history.
