Italian Base in Erbil Hit by Drone, No Casualties Reported

An Italian base in Kurdistan Region came under a missile or drone strike overnight, raising concerns about regional security and troop safety. Italian defense officials confirmed that personnel at the base in Erbil faced no casualties, highlighting the effectiveness of precautionary measures. The Italian base in Iraqi Kurdistan appears resilient despite the attack.

Ministry sources said the strike may have been accidental, as the drone involved possibly lost altitude before hitting a military vehicle. The incident occurred amid heightened tensions following the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran, which prompted regional military alerts. Despite the attack, the Italian base in Kurdistan Regiom remained fully operational.

Colonel Stefano Pizzotti, commander of the base, told Sky TG24 that troops had been warned about aerial threats. Staff took shelter in bunkers hours before the strike, demonstrating preparedness for potential attacks. Italian authorities emphasized that safety protocols and rapid response measures successfully prevented injuries.

The Italian defense ministry initially referred to the event as a missile strike, but later reports clarified that a drone caused the damage. Officials continue investigating the strike’s origin. Meanwhile, base personnel resumed standard operations after confirming the area was secure.

The Italian base in Kurdistan Region hosts around 300 troops who train Kurdish security forces. Officials said troop numbers had been temporarily reduced due to risks from the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict. Nevertheless, the mission remains a critical part of regional stability and counterterrorism training programs.

Analysts believe accidental incidents like this highlight the volatility of regional airspace and emphasize the need for constant vigilance. Furthermore, the strike illustrates the risks that foreign military personnel face while assisting local forces in conflict-prone areas. Italy has reaffirmed its commitment to continue its training mission while keeping all stationed personnel safe.

Authorities inspected military vehicles and equipment for damage and updated preventive measures to avoid future incidents. The Italian base in Kurdistan Region continues to serve as a strategic location for regional security cooperation and support to Kurdish forces, balancing operational objectives with personnel safety.

Overall, the incident, although minor in terms of damage and casualties, underscores ongoing security challenges in Kurdistan Region. Italian officials continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring both readiness and protection of forces stationed abroad.
